"Suite russe" wants to describe a whole century of social dynamics and at the same time narrate a specific episode.
The context is that of the deep division in Russian society between the rich and the poor in the XVIII-XIX centuries, with the high nobility too busy following western fashion and a frivolous lifestyle to notice the growing divide and arising conflict with the other tiers of society.
The necessary change is theorised by the first revolutionary thinkers of different schools, from the socialists to the anarchists, many with the aim of emancipating the peasants and re-distribute fertile land.
The episode that sums up the explosion of social tension is the 1881 assassination of Tsar Alexander II by the revolutionary organization Narodnaja Volja, "Popular Will".
A curious consideration on the subject is how the "popular will" was hardly represented by the revolutionaries, as they were mostly middle class intellectuals and students, with few contacts amongst the less educated population, who was for the most part shocked by the homicide, as they looked up to the Tsar as a fatherly figure, authoritative and venerable at the same time, in a way that we as Voland have summarised as "The Cult of the Tsars".
