about

This song is dedicated to Stepan Razin, cossack and popular hero who lived in the XVII century.
He lead a vast peasant rebellion in the Volga region, flared up as a protest against the abuses of the local nobility, the insurgents demanded the abolition of feudal serfdom and more social justice.
After the initial successes, Stepan Razin was ultimately defeated, captured and executed, but his ideals of equality bestowed him to posterity as a hero of the people.
The lyrics of this song are a collage of the work of several Russian artists who homaged the same theme, starting with the verses by Dmitrij Sadovnikov and Evegenij Evtushenko to the song (The promontory of Stenka Razin) by Alexandr Navrockij, whose title we have borrowed.

lyrics

English translation: "Promontory"

There is a cliff on the Volga, covered with wild moss
From the top to its far edge
It has been standing for hundreds of years, wearing only moss
Not knowing want or worry

From beyond the island in the middle of the stream, on the wide river wave
Sailed out the painted, arrow-breasted boats
Enemy of nobility, true! Enemy of the people, no!
I will not disavow myself, I have chosen my own fate

Volga, dear mother, Russian river!
You have never seen such a gift from a Don cossack
Only the wind blows free
A mighty eagle has made there its nest and in it tears its prey

Of all people only one has been on that promontory
Only one has climbed up to the top
And the promontory has not forgotten that man
And from that moment it bears his name

I'm guilty of the fact, that in a world of wickedness I was a kind fool
I'm guilty of the fact, that as an enemy of servitude I was a bit of a serf myself
I'm guilty of the fact, that I thought I was fighting for a good Tsar
There are no good Tsars, stupid! Stenka, you will die for nothing!

Volga, dear mother, Russian river!
You have never seen such a gift from a Don cossack

And it stands, that cliff, and guards the secret thoughts of Stepan
Alone with the Volga from time to time it remembers
The bold life of the Ataman
